Week 38 Day 6 - Finishing Touches

11:29pm

This baby sure is kicking a lot. Now when she moves, the belly really stretches. I'm waiting for a foot to show through the skin or something. Pretty wild.

We finally got baby's bedding and it all set up in her crib. Tell me what you think, my wife picked it out.

And of course, my favorite part...

Her sign that says "I have found my Prince, I call him daddy".

The bedding is handmade and took ten weeks to receive. Seemed like forever, but her room is finally ready. We also got a changing table, too!

It was my mom's birthday yesterday so we surprised her tonight with a cake!

Week 38 Day 5 - Passing A Pumpkin?

2:28pm

A few updates on the size of the baby. At 38 weeks, the baby is now about the size of a pumpkin!

A PUMPKIN?

When I think of a pumpkin, I think of a big old Halloween Jack-O-Lantern. Big. Large. Somewhat scary depending on who carved it. Ok, that's not the point.

A pumpkin is big. And I know that I wouldn't want one inside of me.

A little further research explains that they don't mean the Guinness Book of World Records Pumpkin. Just a small 6-8lb baby. So that's not so bad.

I have to say, I have gained a lot more respect for mothers, not that I didn't have any before, but I see what they go through to have children, and it's not always pretty. I haven't seen the actual birthing yet. And I'm not looking forward to it, but wow that is intense. Props to the mothers out there. Your quite the troopers.

My wife is always tired. I'm not sure if it's just from being big and pregnant, or if it's because of all the running around we have been doing. These last couple days we have kind of slowed down. These are the last days that we will ever have by ourselves.

Are we in for a big awakening? Is it uphill or downhill from here? I like to think that having children is going to be great! But I have seen a lot of kids cause lots of problems, too. I hope we raise her, and any future children, the right way. The real question is, what is the right way? Is there even one? I think family is wonderful, and if raised correctly, can only bring joy to you and others.

Week 38 Day 4 - Relax!

8:12pm

INJURY REPORT! -

As you all know, I am an apprentice butcher. What that means, is that I am learning all of the cuts of meat, and how to fabricate them. We use machines such as tying machines, meat cubers, grinders, and band saws. The saw is very dangerous, and has no mercy. I have seen some pretty battered up hands after an encounter with the saw.

So now that you understand that, I cut the tip of my finger off at work today. You might not want to look at this picture if you are sensitive to blood.

I'm just kidding. It was pretty much nothing. And it wasn't from the saw, or even a knife. Somehow pulled the skin up after my fingernail. Sorry, I thought it was funny.

My wife is just finishing up the Thank You cards. I should write her a Thank You card for doing them all. What a job that is. Holy crap.

Other than that, today is one of our first "Relax" days. I can't even tell you the last time that we sat down and didn't do anything. There is ALWAYS something to do around here. It really takes a lot of energy out of you. She can't even come home after work without falling asleep.

We need to catch up on as much as we can now, because when the baby is here, we are on her schedule.

Be sure to check out the new "Coupons" page. There are some great offers that I think many of you could benefit from. Lots of diaper coupons, and we already know, that diapers are NOT CHEAP!

Week 38 Day 3 - Who Crapped In The Yard?

8:29pm

It's been a great day so far, minus the stinky feet that found there way into my lap as I'm writing this. My wife seems to think that because her feet are swollen, that they can be rubbed constantly. By me. Yeah, no.

We went to the doctor yesterday, and he said that she is still about a half centimeter dilated. The baby's head is very low in the birthing canal, and she is about 80% effaced.

What effaced means - for people like me -

He also seemed to think that she will make it to her due date. We were concerned about going early, because the baby was measuring larger than normal. But from what he felt, he said she is right on track, and should make it to her due date, September 17th. He is even going to have her schedule a date, the week after, in case she goes past. They won't let her go a week past. She will be induced before that.

Now, let's get serious for a minute. Who does this?

This was the beautiful welcome home I received when I walked up to our front door today.

Why are there still people out there, who walk their dogs, and let them crap all over, and don't pick it up? Is it really that difficult? Why do you even have a dog if you can't clean up after it?

At least I am really hoping that it was from a dog. I guess I shouldn't stereotype.

Why my day was awesome -

Got to spend a little time on the bike today. I followed my wife to the bank and then to dinner. And by dinner I mean a really bad choice.

I feel sorry for my body, tomorrow.

If you have never been to a White Castle, don't. It is too delicious to stop eating, and your colon will hate you.

Week 38 Day 2 - Passed Out Dad

1:23pm

I could probably write a whole story about the dangers of eating three hot dogs for lunch, like I just did. But I really don't care, because they were delicious. Actually, they were expired. Almost a month, expired. But I ate them anyways. Why? Because I am a MAN. And that's what we do.

Although, we usually don't do this....

Last night, after I wrote yesterday's post, we continued to organize the baby's room. I had been up at 5:30am that morning, followed by an exhausting day at work. Then a family party.

Reallly, I was pretty darn tired.

Most of the following I do not remember....

My wife said that I fell asleep. On the floor. Against the baby's crib. With my iPad underneath my head, like a pillow, and my iPhone still in my hand.

Anyone that knows me, knows that this is not that hard to believe. I am glued to my phone. Then again, who isn't these days?

I wish she had a picture.

Here I was, sleeping on her new pink shaggy carpet. It looks really comfortable, so I don't really blame myself. But how did I end up on the floor in the first place? I must have been so tired that I don't even remember sitting down? Apparently, I wasn't helping organize too much.

I have a feeling that once she is here, this type of situation will happen quite a few more times. Long, late nights feeding, and comforting the baby. I know that many parents find that sleep is not as prevalent as before-baby. There are loads of stories about parents falling asleep in the nurseries, and other odd places.

I will remember last night as the FIRST of many future awkward sleeping locations.

Week 38 Day 1 - Get Out The Dreft

9:37pm

I met my wife at my parents house, after work. Some of my family was over swimming. When I got there, we started grilling out. Burgers, chicken kabobs, and sausages. They like when I cook, since I am the "culinary-inclined" one in the family.

One of the friends of the family has a newborn, and two other small kids. So we were able to have a little taste of what we will be experiencing shortly. I didn't hold him, but my wife did for a while. She likes that kind of stuff, but I am still a little shy with babies. I'm sure it will be different with my own.

Right now we are in the babies room sorting some more of her stuff. Also putting together a pile of her clothes, and blankets, etc, that needs to get washed. We bought a big bottle of Dreft laundry soap. I never realized that babies have different laundry detergent than us. I have learned quite a bit about newborns and being a father already, seems like something new every day. And she isn't even here yet.
